Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ian’s Daily Update?

Ian’s Daily Update is a quick, real-world look at what’s moving mortgage rates and the markets each day. It’s written specifically for mortgage professionals—not economists.

Who writes the Daily Update?

ian does. The market commentary and Rate Ramblings are written by ian, not generated by AI.

Who the hell is ian?

ian Ashton (NMLS 406549) is a mortgage industry veteran who has spent his career in Retail and Consumer Direct mortgage banking, with experience spanning lending, sales, and leadership. Today, ian leads a National Distributed Retail team, as well as the Consumer Direct forward and reverse division for the OneTrust Home Loans family of companies.

He’s a self-professed market nerd who spends an unreasonable amount of time following bonds, mortgage rates, economic data, housing, and the Fed.

Ian’s Daily Update started as a way to give his own team a straightforward explanation of what was actually happening in the market—without the economist-speak, recycled headlines, or unnecessary noise. Turns out, other loan officers found it useful too.

When he’s not obsessing over the bond market, he’s usually screwing around with old cars, drag racing, or finding another project he probably didn’t need.

What is Rate Ramblings?

Rate Ramblings breaks down the economic news, bond-market moves, housing data, Fed developments, and other events affecting mortgage rates—in plain English and with an LO’s perspective.

What are Reprice Alerts?

Reprice Alerts are subscriber-only notices sent when market movement reaches a threshold where lender reprices may begin to appear. Subscribers will receive them by email and can also view them on the website. An alert identifies the possibility of repricing; it is not a guarantee that every lender will reprice.

What determines the “strike price” for a Reprice Alert?

ian tracks pricing across more than 15 lenders daily to develop a proprietary “strike price” used to determine reprice thresholds. Because lenders can react differently and at different times, the strike price is an informed market signal—not a promise that a particular lender will reprice.

Can I share this content?

Yes. You’re welcome to share a link to an update or use the commentary as a starting point for your own client or social content. Copy it, shorten it, add your own perspective, or rewrite it for your audience.

Is this financial advice or a rate recommendation?

No. The Daily Update is market commentary and educational information for mortgage professionals. It isn’t a recommendation to lock, float, buy, sell, or make a specific financial decision.
